Premiazione 2010

  • Prof.ssa Rebecca Spitzmiller, Co-Fondatrice, Retake Rome
  •  Dott.ssa Anita Garibaldi, Presidente – Fondazione Giuseppe Garibaldi
  • On. Francesco Maria Orsi, Consigliere del Comune di Roma
  • Dott.ssa Maria Claudia Mastrapasqua, Consigliere – Municipio II
  • Dott.ssa Beth Pfannl, Head of School, American Overseas School of Rome,

Retake Rome is an apolitical, non sectarian movement run by volunteers that operates under the auspices of the Giuseppe Garibaldi (ONLUS) Foundation. The purpose of Retake Rome is to restore the cleanliness of the city of Rome by clearing the litter and removing vandalistic tagging that is defacing our city of its eternal beauty.

On 22 May 2010 Retake Rome held a city-wide meeting at Torretta de’ Massimi to celebrate the culmination of its activities of its first few months of life. At that spectacular rural setting just outside the city walls, our gracious hostess Ms. Lori Hickey, co-founder of Retake Rome welcomed the following participants:
  • Rebecca Spitzmiller, Co-Founder, Retake Rome
  • Anita Garibaldi, President – Fondazione Giuseppe Garibaldi
  • Hon. Francesco Maria Orsi, Consigliere del Comune di Roma
  • Maria Claudia Mastrapasqua, Consigliere – Municipio II
  • Dr Beth Pfannl, Head of School, American Overseas School of Rome,
and numerous others Retake Rome collaborators whose enthusiastic support has enabled our team to attain the goals that its founding members envisioned when they first launched the project, abstract ideas that have turned into a concrete reality visible for all the citizens of Rome to appreciate.
In a stirring address, Prof. Spitzmiller, reminded us of the humble origins of an organization that has grown rapidly in a short period of time and which now boasts hundreds of volunteers “Retakers” — rich in energy, ideas, and especially enthusiasm and versatility – who now support our cause.
In attendance at the festivities were representatives of the media as well as public institutions that Retake Rome is working with in order to implement the important objective of directly involving the schools in Rome in spreading awareness of civic responsibility above all in teaching young people to recuperate public well-being.
At the highpoint of the celebrations, President of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Foundation Anita Garibaldi gave a moving speech directed in particular at the young adults and children who were present. She emphasized how their support of Retake Rome has driven the enthusiasm of the Retakers. Through their courageous intervention youngsters are the builders of change, and it’s through their involvement and in their hands that Italy can once again attain a true sense of civic pride.
The underlying theme of the occasion was, mainly, to emphasize the one of the most important principles of the movement, which is to instill in both Roman and non-Roman young people a sense of civic responsibility and respect for human dignity. To that purpose prizes were awarded to the winning contestants who submitted the best original designs and projects to the Retake Rome publicity campaign. Special honours went to the students at the Istituto Cristo Re, who have offered ongoing support.

On display were examples of American Overseas School of Rome students’ artwork, submitted to the Retake Rome 2010 ad-campaign contest.  This work underlines important aspects of the movement and of its mother Foundation: to promote social cooperation and to stimulate the spirit of initiative, self confidence, and the ability to work in a team, experience that builds a strong background for the future of every Retaker.
